How The Littermaid Litter Box Works
The Littermaid self cleaning litter box itself is just is a large litter box with an electric motor that drags a fine toothed rake through the litter box once the cat has taken care of business. The unit uses sensors that are triggered when the cat leaves the litter box to start the cleaning cycle.
Once the sensors are triggered a timer is set to begin raking 10 minutes after the cat leaves the Littermaid unit. The reason for the delay is to give the litter enough time to clump properly.
Then the rake will comb through the litter and drag the clumps into the Littermaid waste receptacle and close its cover to keep odors down.
The Littermaid features a sealed and disposable waste compartment. When the receptacle is full you simply lift the compartment lid remove it and throw it away.
There is no need to worry about the Littermaid automatic litter box starting with your cat in it. Even if a cat enters the litter box before the 10 minute cleaning cycle the timer will be automatically reset for another 10 minutes. When a cat enters the globe shaped litter box its weight activates a sensor that detects the cats presence. Then after 7 minutes a cleaning cycle begins. The globe begins to rotate slowly as the globe sifts through the litter and separates out the clumps from the clean litter. Then the waste is deposited into a large drawer that is lined with a kitchen garbage bag. The dome then returns to its original position with a clean bed of litter ready for the next use.

Will Your Cat Be Able To Use The Litter Robot LRII ECO?
No litter box is worth much if your cat wont use it whether automatic or not. There are two things you need to know about litter robot.
Your cat must weigh at least five pounds in order to active the sensor. If you have a kitten you want to train to use it you will have to leave Litter Robot off and turn it on manually after your cat is done.
Not all cats like using a covered litter box. If you are not sure your cat will take to it you may want to buy a cheaper covered litter box like the Booda Dome to get them used to the idea before you take the plunge.
The Two Biggest Problems Cats May Have With Litter Robot
The main negative complaint people had was that their cats wont use the Litter Robot. This is not a large number of people complaining either and almost all used a conventional open litter box so their cats were not used to a domed litter box.
The Litter Robot includes a 90 day trial period so if you cant get your cat to use it you can get your money back.
One other problem is that occasionally cropped up was that some cats wont get all the way inside the dome or turn around when they urinate which can be messy. This really is more of a training issue than anything being wrong with the Litter Robot but you should be aware of it.
If you have a large cat consider getting the Litter Robot Bubble Unit so your cat has more room. It appears this may be the reason why some cats don’t go all the way in and turn around, that and some cats can be a bit claustrophobic so having a clear bubble may help them.
